Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007)
Gian Carlo Menotti was born on 7 July 1911, in Cadegliano, Italy. At the age of 7, under the guidance of his mother, he began to compose songs, and four years later he wrote the words and music of his first opera, The Death of Pierrot. In 1923 he began his formal musical training at the Verdi Conservatory in Milan. Following the death of his father, his mother took him to the United States, where he was enrolled at Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music. There he completed his musical studies, working in composition under Rosario Scalero.
The Consul, Menotti's first full-length work, won the Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle award as the best musical play of the year in 1954. By far Menotti's best-known work is the Christmas classic Amahl and the Night Visitors, composed for NBC-TV in 1951. This beloved opera celebrated the 50th anniversary of its premiere in 2001, and continues to receive hundreds of performances annually.

SYNOPSIS
Madame Flora, with the help of her daughter Monica and Toby, a mute servant, tries to cheat her clients through faked seances. She is touched herself by a hand during one of them, an occurrence she cannot explain and which drives her to insanity and murder.

The Medium (1946) is darkly atmospheric, with a Gothic-inspired libretto (also by Menotti) and a lush score in the neo-Romantic style with which Menotti and his life partner Samuel Barber came to be associated. Schicchi (1918), though a classic buffo comedy full of obfuscation and parlor tricks, holds rich and tuneful music full of earworms galore and is unmistakably Puccini. Black Horses takes its inspiration from a Pirandello short story and attempts to capture the combination of humor, absurdism, and pathos that characterize much of its source author’s work.

MUSICAL STYLE/ CHARACTERISTICS
This aria is in the key of G minor and 4/4 time. At the beginning of this aria, we see the Allegretto con moto tempo marking, which indicates that the composer intended for it to be played fairly lively and briskly. As for the form, the A part is repeated 3 times with the only change being the text in the middle part. The B part is different from the A part in every way. We see changes in texture, feelings, and tempo, with the highlight being the apparent change in the soloist’s tone color and the widened range.

เพลง “The Black swan” ที่เราได้หยิบยกมาเป็นเพลงที่เกิดในเหตุการณ์ขณะที่ มอนิก้า กำลังปลอบแม่ของเธอที่กำลังกลัว และ หลอน จากการที่รู้สึกว่าตนเองกำลังโดนบีบคอ เป็นความเป็นห่วงที่เธอพยายามที่จะปลอบประโลมให้แม่ของเธอนั้นใจเย็น และ กลับมามีสติอีกครั้ง

The Medium, Act I - “The Black Swan”
Gian Carlo Menotti was a prodigious Italian composer. His first composition was finished when he was only 7, taught mainly in music by his mother. He wrote his first opera, The Death of Pierrot Menotti, when he was 11. He attended the Verdi Conservatory in Milan before transferring to another university in the U.S. as soon as his father died. It was in the U.S. that he wound have found himself plethora of job opportunities and eventually received several awards such as The Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle award.
The Medium was Menotti’s first opera about a tragedy. Composed in 1946 and performed by the team from Columbia University, it is a very short opera of only 1 hour, with the script and the music all composed by Menotti himself.
The story revolves around a family of three, who worked together to trick people into thinking that one of them is a spirit medium and charged people for their fraudulent scam. With the help of her daughter, Monica, and her muted servant, Toby; Flora, the self-proclaimed medium, would proceed to make quite a fortune out of her dubious scheme.
One day, during one of the rituals, Flora felt a pair of hands on her neck, trying to strangle her. Afraid that it was something supernatural, she broke down while trying to reason with herself the incident that had just occurred. She went on to investigate the two of her assistants, wishing it was them rather than an actual ghost, and quickly concluded that it was Toby and subsequently killed him. Unbeknownst to Flora, her daughter and Toby had been in love for a while. This sad news of her mother killing her lover threw Monica onto the brink of hysteria.
The Black Swan is sung when Monica was consoling her mother after the incident at the ritual.
