Song to the moon
Rusalka has fallen in love with a Prince. Unfortunately, Rusalka is a water sprite and cannot come out of the water or communicate with him. She asks the moon to tell her love that she is thinking of him.

Setting : Dvorak's Rusalka takes place in a picturesque lake in an idyllic forest.
The most popular and successful Czech opera, Rusalka, tells the story of an immortal water nymph from Slavic Mythology who falls in love with a prince and yearns to become human. It is a sad and touching fairy tale which contains many similarities to Undine by German poet Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué and The Little Mermaid by Danish writer Hans Christian Anderson.
The opera Rusalka is based on the fairy tales of the folklorist Karel Jaromír Erben and the Czech writer, Božena Němcová.

MUSICAL STYLE/ CHARACTERISTICS
Rusalka was successful a collaboration between him and Jaroslav Kvapi, a scriptwriter libretto, with Kvapi himself also inspired by Dvorak’s music. Even though Rusalka share many flavors with Wagner’s works, some of its musical condiments are only distinctive to Dvorak’s cuisine. The differences are apparent in Song to the Moon which perfectly captures the style of Dvorak’s melodic and harmonic pacing.

The word “Rusalka” means a water dryad in the form of a female human. In this opera, one dryad, also named “Rusalka” fell in love with a human man, and then made a pact with a witch to get a real tangible human body. Before Rusalka called out the witch for this pact, she had to express her love towards the man to the moon; hence “Song to the Moon”
